Why I Hate Writing & FOUND

(Y'all realize ^ ^ ^ that's me being intentionally provocative, right?) I know, what???

Here's the deal, and I'll keep it short. I love being a writer. I couldn't do anything else, and it's all I've done professionally for almost 20 years.

But it wasn't until 2009 that I started writing novels.

When I did that, it was a lot like when I went from being a full-time professional, career gal in a bustling, busy office surrounded by fast-moving people...

...to being a full-time, professional Mom, in a quiet home, alone with a beautiful little baby girl who didn't smile at me for three months.

(If they smile before three months, it's gas. Read the book, people. #nerdmom)

Flower says, "What, I'm
not lively enough for you?"
Writing novels is awesome! I love it! And it is looonely.

Spoiler Alert: I'm a pretty social person.

In the past, I've had jobs in public relations and marketing. I was a journalist, which requires you to talk to people...

Writing novels is not like that. And some of you like it that way!

But what about the rest of us?

Well, it helps to get connected, of course. I'm not intimidated about reaching out to other writers (I blame my past work experience), but even for me, that isn't always successful.

For one, writers need to write.

Social media and writers' groups are FAB, but to do this job (write novels), one has to be alone for a good amount of time. And writers don't always coordinate their schedules with each other. (Read: never.)

Some writers are grumpy, mole-type people, who really don't want to make friends. I get that. Sometimes I feel like a grumpy mole-type person, too! And I hate to say it, but outside the group here, I've bumped into some writers... who aren't very nice for whatever reason.

I'm a Cancerian, and I'm sure writer-friend Tami Hart Johnson (link) can tell you better than me why that makes me scamper back into my shell quicker than... something really fast.

Luckily, none of you guys are like that. ((hugs))

So I'm just thinking out loud over here, coming off a new book release. It's quiet. And I actually have promos to do for the publicity blitz coming...

Y'all know I've joined a few writer's groups, The Indelibles (who are fantastic!), Indies Ignite (who are up and coming!), and most recently YA Confidential (who are hilariously helpful!).

We'll see if I can balance this. And of course, YOU, my bloggy reader- and writer-friends, supporting each other since Feb. 2010.

I guess, what do you guys think? And if anybody's looking for a group or if there's a group that needs a member(s), you can put it in the comments. I encourage you to team up! Don't be scared off by grumps or meanies. We've got to have friends in this tough business.

I'm so thankful for mine~

Now what's this FOUND?

Found
From Stacey Wallace Benefiel, the author of the Zellie Wells trilogy, comes a New Adult trilogy set in the Society world.

Penny Black hasn’t had it easy. Just about everything you’d expect to happen to a harassed foster-kid turned junkie has happened to Penny.

Add in the mysterious power to rewind time, conducting events around her, and it’s a wonder she held up on the streets for so many years.

Now, at seventeen, the New Society has found her. Finally, Penny is where she belongs. But that doesn’t stop the visions, or the need to protect the victims shown to her.

*The Penny Black trilogy is a companion to the Zellie Wells trilogy and not a continuation of the series. (It's set 18 years in the future with a new cast of characters.)

*Due to language and sexuality, FOUND is recommended for older teens. (Most of the characters are out of high school and preparing for college.)

Purchase links:

Coming soon to the Apple iBook store and in paperback!

Haven't read the Zellie Wells trilogy yet? Pick up all three novels together for $6.99 at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Smashwords, and iTunes. Or get the first novel, Glimpse, for FREE at all ebook retailers.

And have a great week-end, reader- and writer-friends! <3

  1. I have no problems being alone (big shock), a social person is the exact opposite of me. But I do understand what your going through. You draw energy from all of that, whereas it drains mine. I hope that doesn't make me a grumpy meanie. :)

  2. I'm there with you- This last year has been hard because I went from being a social college student- avid in the school magazine and arts stuffies to staying at home all day long editing for a living and working on my first novel.
There was more than one day I thought I would go insane because I hadn't spoken to anyone.
Yes I cried, but things are slowly better now. It's a process to switch over. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

  3. I love people and out socializing gives me ideas, but when I'm writing I need some time alone. It's not a bad thins because everyone going to job, works for oneself and in a personal way. Writers write in solitude, generally!

  4. I love to talk and be social...I am not one of those quiet, introverted writers. Not at all. :) Shy does not define me. (I'm not even afraid to speak in public in front of large crowds) Therefore, I tend to write late at night, after everyone has long gone to sleep and I have no one to talk with...I also meet up with other writers to do write-ins. It can be hard not to talk, though.

  5. I can yap someones ear off or hideaway at my bay with ease and if I need someone to talk to the cat is around and doesn't talk back, much, haha and it is fun being a grumpy goo too!

  6. I'm a cancer birthday too, so I know what you mean about going into a shell.

Even though I work at a busy office for my day job, I still find the writing lonely. I agree so much that it's important to connect with other writers and become friends. It's so critical that we support each other and stay friends. I love some of the group blogs out there and am so glad I teamed up with Casey. She's helped me so much as I've learned how to blog and we work well together.

  7. Oh, Sweet Pea, you silly girl. I love being alone, but that may partially be because I have to deal with people during the daytime. But I think part of it is also that I just bond better in writing. I have such an amazing online network. And about 95% of the time, that is where I'd prefer my social time... cuz see... in person, I'm awkward...

  8. Yes, it is lonely, but it's also unhealthy, crouched over the computer. Great pity as it's so enjoyable.

  9. @Don--it's not the "alone" part so much as it is the "when I'm done" part... But you are NOT a grumpy meanie by any stretch! :D <3

@Adriana--You are so right. Writing requires solitude, and that's good! It's good to have folks waiting for you, too! Thanks for stopping by! :o) <3

@RGG--I wish I was a night owl. I always just konk out when it gets dark--LOL! Oh, the times I've lamented this... <3

@CAC--I didn't even THINK about the sitting all day, crouched part... why do we do this again? Oh, right. We can't not~ :D <3

  10. It is never easy to go through dramatic life changes--marriage, babies, changing jobs, etc., but you do learn from them and grow from the learning. Remember how painful a growth spurt was when you were a kid or how sensitive your feelings were at the time? We'd rather forget those sensations as we get older, but they're the important ones to keep in mind. Don't ever lose the sensitivity. It's the foundation of creativity and longevity as a writer.

  11. I think that's why I enjoy Twitter so much. During one of those lonely writing stints, you can always find someone to chat with. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm chatty in my own head. And in a social situation once I've warmed into it. But I always shy away from social situations, mainly because I'm LAZY. LOL. I really enjoy being on my own. I'm not part of a group, but would love to be, but I'm not sure I fit into any! :-( Know any literary with a commercial bent, definitely for adults groups?

  13. I'm very social and a Cancerian too! Thankfully most of the writer peeps I've "met" online are pretty nice. But I'm sure there's a few not so nice people in any vocation.

  14. Amen to that! Writing really does make us recluse and it's so great to have other writer friends. A Godsend.
