"Edgy, Raw" Award-Winning YA Romance On Sale

The Truth About Letting Go, is on sale for 99 Cents this week/weekend (FREE in Kindle Unlimited). It's been three years since I wrote the story, but I still remember the emotions behind it so well.

I've never lost a parent, but at the time I was going grieving a different sort of loss. My life had taken a turn I never anticipated, and I was reeling with the pain of it, trying to understand why God would do this to me and my little family.

I won't go into details, but I'll just say I poured all that frustration and pain into this book in the form of Ashley trying to understand the sudden death of her father.

Some readers have sent me messages saying I got it exactly right. Some have said they identified with Ashley and the way she felt and acted after losing their own parents. Others said while they didn't react so violently to the loss of a loved one, their siblings or others close to them did.

Those are the most gratifying emails I ever receive.

The Truth About Letting Go is not always an easy read, but it was nominated as a finalist by The Kindle Book Award in 2013. I appreciated that recognition so much.

The story does have a happy ending, and we do find our heroine on the road to recovery by the end. I hope you'll read it and "get it." If you don't, that's okay.

“Wait...” I remembered falling asleep in Julian's arms last night, how good it felt. His lips on my skin. “Just be quiet!”

He grinned and climbed through my window, dropping softly to the floor. I sat facing him, unsure what to do now.

“You’re lucky I had that assignment.” I let him lace our fingers. “Or I’d have been asleep.”

His blue eyes flickered to mine, and it was all I could do to stay where I was. “Would you have got up and let me in?” he asked.

I didn’t hesitate. “Yes.”

We sat for a few seconds not speaking. I couldn’t help it—I had to cover a yawn with my hand.

“You tired?” he asked, pushing one of my curls back.

“It’s almost midnight.”

“Get in,” he said, standing up. “I’ll sit beside you til you fall asleep.”

I watched as he slipped off the long-sleeved flannel shirt he wore, my brow lining as I admired his physique, standing there in only a white tee. I went to my bed, but I stopped. “You want to climb in for a few minutes?”

He grinned. “I was hoping you’d say that.”

We slid between the covers, and I turned so my back was pressed into his chest. One of his arms went around my waist, and the other was under my head. I felt him kiss the top of my shoulder, and warmth flooded my body.

“Will you fall asleep?” I asked.

“Probably.” His breath against my neck made me shiver. “But I can set my phone to vibrate early.”
He took his arms away, and I scooted around to watch him set the alarm. He slipped it in his back pocket and looked at me.

“It’s nice being here with you,” he said, touching my cheek with the back of his finger.

“I like you being here with me.”

His palm went to my face and kissed me softly. I kissed him back, and he rolled above me kissing me deeper as I wrapped my arms around his neck. I felt his hand slowly trace down the front of my nightshirt. My heartbeat picked up, and I lay back.

I turned and walked down the long balcony and around to a part of the house I’d never explored. 

Another hallway led westward to what had to be the master suite. A door at the end was ajar, and as I got closer, I could hear a voice coming from what sounded like an individual moving quickly.

“I can’t believe you didn’t wake me,” the voice said. It was a woman’s, and as I crept closer, it sounded like Ms. LaSalle’s!

“I wasn’t awake myself,” Mr. Kyser said, and I could hear his smile.

Pressing my eyes closed, knowing it was a huge risk, I stepped forward so I could peek through the crack near the hinges. I had to know if my ears were right.

When I opened my eyes, I saw Ms. LaSalle in the bedroom wearing only a man’s dress shirt. Her long, dark hair slid around her shoulders as she hastily collected a slip, pantyhose, one shoe. “Where’s my dress?” she asked.

My eyes went wide, and my hand flew to my mouth. Julian was right—his mom was seeing someone… and it was his dad! It was like a car crash. I couldn’t look away. They’d clearly spent the night together, but what did this mean? And would they agree to tell Julian now?

“I’m pretty sure I removed your dress downstairs,” Mr. Kyser said in a casual tone that sounded exactly like his son. 

Unable to breathe, I carefully leaned away, pressing my back against the wall outside the door. I was scared to take a step in case they heard me, but I had to get out of here.

Me, Cavegirl... and the first WATERCOLOR #Teaser!

In the cave uh-gain???

I know, right? *looks around* I thought I just left this place!

But I'll be honest, I am loving the cave right now. I'm diving back into Watercolor (link), and I haven't actually read this book since 2010.

Here's the timeline:

-January 2010, I'd finished Dragonfly and started shopping it.
-While I waited, I wrote Undertow then Watercolor... bringing us up to Spring 2010...

-May 2010, I put the series in the virtual drawer and wrote The Truth About Faking

-Summer 2010, little children at home, no writing is done...
-Sept 2010, I wrote Rouge... and simultaneously shopped Faking & Rouge.

-Spring 2011, landed an agent, who started shopping Rouge.

-Summer 2011, we moved 850 miles away from the beach. *majorly sad panda*
-Fall 2011 into Spring 2012, played the traditional game while writing my science fiction book 21 Days.
-Summer 2012, I got a Big 6 Deal for Rouge... that turned out to be not so great. *sad panda*

-Sept 2012, self-published Faking, which really took off,
-Nov 2012, self-published Rouge, which really didn't take off...

-Dec 2012, wrote The Truth About Letting Go, self-published in Feb. 2013

Which gets us to March 2013 and me revising, rewriting, basically dismantling and reassembling Dragonfly, which was published in June.

Undertow was pretty much ready to go as it was. Now I'm going back through Watercolor, and ZOMG.

I think y'all are going to love it so much. I'm reading it and just smiling so big. It's all Anna & Julian's love story, and their chemistry is so great and their banter, and it's just funny and swoony and a little sexy...

*squeek*!!! I can't wait to share it with you guys!

I'm home again, home again and digging out like crazy. It's about to be a bizzay two weeks leading up to the release of Undertow...

...and I am SO EXCITED!

I released the breath I didn’t realize I was holding and slowly turned away. I walked to the windows to stare out at the darkness. I was beaten. I could never win this fight with her.

“I know,” I said quietly. “I knew you would say that. I’ve been going over and over it in my mind, but I knew in the end you would always say those words.”

Her voice was small. “I do care about you, and if things were different…”

“But they’re not.”

“They’re not,” she repeated.

I turned back and tried to smile through the pain. “So what now? What do you want from me?”

She tried to smile back, but a single tear hit her cheek. It ripped me in two.

“Nothing,” she said. “I’d like to have this baby if that’s okay with you. You don’t have to do anything. I can take care of us, and you won’t ever have to worry—”

“I’m not worried,” I said. “Whatever makes you happy.”

“I’m sorry if you’re angry,” her voice broke. “I’m sorry if… if I’ve hurt you.”

“There’s no need to apologize. You’re right. Of course, you’re right. About everything.” There was only one thing I wanted. “I just… I hope you’ll stay here. I’d like to be able to see you. Both of you. Even if it’s from a distance.”

Her brow creased. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

“I won’t force you, but I wish you would. That way I could help you if you ever needed it. You wouldn’t even have to ask, just let me know somehow.”

She nodded. “I’ll think about it.”

I walked slowly to where she stood and reached down to take her hand. I looked at it a moment, thinking how precious it was to me now. “I want to know that you’re okay.”

First Undertow Picture Teaser

It's coming...

July 18 is the official release date for Undertow, #2 in the Dragonfly series.

Reader-friends, I confess: I really love this book, even though it focuses on a dark topic--the events that led to the death of Meg Kyser and why they're being kept a secret.

Of course, you have the hopeful start of Anna & Julian's budding relationship for balance, and the bad stuff all happened in the past (revealed Rashomon style, link, through the three journals).

I guess I like it because it's so sadly real and human. Three young people, two highly ambitious, who start out with good intentions (for the most part) and then make mistakes, try to control each other, try to fix their mistakes, make more, mess up a whole bunch of lives... yanno.

I guess in a way, it's similar to the Truth books because there's a message in Undertow. At the same time, it should appeal to Rouge fans, since it's New Adult--meaning the characters are post-high school/college age and it contains more mature content. (Of course, it's not erotica.)
